Alfred Jay Courtney, age 90 of Batesville died Tuesday, November 4, 2008 at the Wood Lawn Nursing Home in Batesville. He was born March 14, 1918 at Guion, Arkansas to Norman Ezra and Nannie Nancy (Engles) Courtney. He was a U. S. Army veteran having served during World War II as a medic, retired from the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department in Batesville and was a member of the Harrison Street Church of Christ in Batesville.He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Willie McSpadden Courtney, one son James Courtney and one sister Harriette Grice.Survivors include his wife Faye Hester Courtney of Batesville, one brother E. A. Courtney of Davison, Michigan, one sister Mary Landers of Desha, two grandsons, two great grandsons, one great granddaughter, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services will begin Friday, November 7, 2008 at 10:00 a.m. at the Qualls Batesville Funeral Service Chapel of Batesville with Ralph Wallis officiating. Burial will follow in the Campground Cemetery located at Bethesda with arrangements by Qualls Batesville Funeral Service of Batesville.Visitation will be Thursday, November 6, 2008 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.Pallbearers will be Fred Arnold, Laddy Barber, Mitch Williams, Charles Jordan, James Simmons and Bob Hughes.Honorary pallbearers are the Men of the Harrison Street Church of Christ and Employees of the Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department.
