J. W. 'Jay' Cowan, age 87 of Cave City died Monday, June 22, 2009 at the White River Medical Center in Batesville. He was born August 21, 1921 at Smithville, Arkansas to John William and Nancy Ellen (Stalnaker) Cowan. He was a member of the First Missionary Baptist Church at Cave City.He was preceded in death by four sisters, Dessie Mae Simpson, Leona Anderson, Willie Massey and Madie Fay Cowan, a half-sister Della Ware and two half-brothers, General Cowan and Earnest Cowan.Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Glindeen Simpson Cowan of the home, one sister Noma Hoggard of Batesville, several nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends.Funeral services will begin Thursday, June 25, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City with Bro. Wayne Goodman and Bro. Ron Canard officiating. Burial will follow in the Smithville Cemetery located at Smithville with arrangements by Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City.Visitation will begin Wednesday, June 24, 2009 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m.Pallbearers will be James Paul Landers, Chris Chance, Mark Crouch, James Hoggard, Jimmy Hoggard and Paul Hoggard.Honorary pallbearers are Darrell Shreve, Don McSpadden, Rex Gaither, Buddy Hoggard, Laman Kerr, Terry Weaver, Keith Kerr, Edward Lynn McClure, Tracy Anthony, Danny Simpson, Jim Simpson and Willis Simpson.
