Sammie Gerald Owens died on Tuesday July 6, 2010 at the age of 80. Sam was born December 16, 1929 in Newport, Arkansas, he was the the son of Claude Everett Owens and Eva Catherine Green.Sam married Hazel Sumner on September 29, 1952. They moved to Washington State where they raised three children, Roger Owens, Retta (John) Stavenjord and Gary Owens.His grandchildren were all very special to him, Josh Owens, Johnathan Stavenjord, Cory Stavenjord, Damon Java Owens and Sahara Owens. He also had a great-granddaughter, Kalia Stavenjord.Sam served in the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the VFW. He worked in the fruit industry in Washington State and when he retired he moved to Cave City in 1996.Sam (POP) enjoyed watching his grandsons play baseball and took them fishing many times. He loved to dance and listen to country music. He enjoyed going to the dances in Arkansas and spending time with his many friends.He is survived by his loving wife, Hazel of 57 years; his brother, Willie (Janice) Owens; his sisters, Rosa (Rufus) Bone and Pauline Edwards, along with many other relatives.He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Everett Owens.His great smile and sense of humor will be truly missed.In lieu of flowers, please send donations in Sam's name to the Melbourne VFW or the Senior Citizen Center in Brockwell. The family would like to thank the staff at the White River Medical Center and the Cave City Nursing Home for their care during this trying time.At the request of the family no services will be held.
