Dr. Donald Eugene Smith age 68 of Lake Placid, Florida (formerly of Batesville) died Friday February 8, 2013 in Tampa, Florida. Born September 29, 1944 in Alice Texas, he was the son of Dr. Charles C. Smith and Lennie P. Smith. He graduated from Batesville High School, attended Lyon College, and graduated with a PhD in chemistry from Oklahoma State University. He worked as a research chemist for Inland Steel in Chicago for a number of years before moving to Mantech Environmental Services in Durham, North Carolina. After he retired in 1999, he and his wife, Kay, moved to Sunrise Beach, Missouri, spending the winters in Texas, Mexico and Florida. Don and Kay were avid gardeners and also enjoyed fishing, and entertaining their neighbors. They spent a great deal of time combing local thrift shops and yard sales for toys to take to children in their travels to Mexico. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Wanda Kay Smith; and a brother, William F. Smith. He is survived by a son, Jeremy Smith of Chapel Hill, North Carolina; a daughter, Jessica Smith of Asheville, North Carolina and two brothers, Dr. Clinton Smith and Andrew Smith of Batesville. Funeral services will be Saturday February 16, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at the Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City. Burial will follow in the Cave City Cemetery with arrangements by Qualls Funeral Home of Cave City. Visitation will be from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the Qualls Funeral Home Chapel in Cave City.
